"'United' and 'Free' describes the church well"
A review of Beeston Hill United Free Church by Revd Geoff Ellis - Thursday 16th of October 2008
Beeston Hill United Free Church is an ecumenical partnership with Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed roots formed when four churches came together over 35 years ago. 'United' and 'Free' describes the church well, with an age range of 0-90+. The church seeks to offer an informal, open and varied style of worship, with a warm welcome for anyone who would happen to wander in off the street. Prayer and fellowship play an important part in worship and the daily life of church members. The church is in an urban priority area with many needs. In recent years we have been blessed by new members joining us from a variety of multi ethnic roots such as Ghana, Angola, Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea and these include refugees and asylum seekers. We have just had a formative family weekend in Scarborough with over 60 people from all sections of the church involved. Our work with young people has grown on Sunday mornings with J4J (Juniors for Jesus). Supporting an active Boys Brigade has been an important part of the church for many years. We also have Guides and Brownies who join us for our monthly All Age worship. For the last five years we have hosted a satellite of Kidz Klub Leeds which attracts over 120 children each Tuesday evening. It is led by an ecumenical team drawn from many churches. The Klub has grown this year to two sessions by bussing in children from across Leeds11. We are active in supporting Church Together in Leeds11 which funds a Community Outreach Worker. We are currently exploring a potential partnership with a community health development organisation to make best use of our buildings for community outreach. There is a growing desire within the church leadership to share the building with the local community and bring communities together as an expression of our Christian identity.
